about:blank
wait so this isn't even a website? here's the actual lore.

ok ngl. i typed about:blank in the bar and the page was just... nothing.
not loading. not an error. no wifi-died icon. just a tab that looks like the browser rage-quit. dark mode? black. light mode? white. that's the whole plot.
and then my brain would not let it go. like wait. what is this. is this a site. who hosts it. can i inspect it. why does it feel illegal.
so i actually looked it up. the lore is kind of insane.
wait, what even is this
about:blank is not a website.
there's no server. no domain. nobody bought this on godaddy. your browser just makes it up.
the about: bit is a special url scheme. same family as https: or file:, except this one never leaves your laptop. it's the browser talking to itself. chrome has a whole city of chrome:// pages. firefox has about:config. about:blank is the quiet cousin. the one with nothing on it on purpose.
so when you "visit" it, the browser cooks an empty html document in memory and hands it to you. no dns. no request. no "connecting...". you were never going anywhere.
open inspect. it's basically an empty <html>. that's not a bug. that's the product.
so it's fake?
not fake. just internal.
browsers need a page when you haven't picked one yet. new tab with no homepage. an iframe with no src. window.open() with no url. a popup that's about to load something. you can't have a tab that's literally null. the window has to exist. so they invented a page that is allowed to be empty.
it's the default for "idk yet". a legal blank. the url for nowhere.
that's actually wild if you sit with it. the whole internet is "go here". this one is "you're not going anywhere, and that's fine".
what's the real meaning tho
technically: an empty document. a blank html page that never hit a network. it's in the spec. not a meme. browsers have needed this for decades.
the real meaning is dumber and better.
it's the only tab that isn't trying to sell you something, notify you, autoplay, or make you feel behind. no feed. no for you. no cookie banner. it doesn't even want a favicon. it's giving "i have not decided yet" and then it just... stays there.
people will turn it into a metaphor. empty canvas. new beginnings. main character reset. nah. it's just the browser being honest for once. you didn't go anywhere. so there's nothing to show.
i keep too many tabs open. one for college. one for github. one for some random thing from 1am. all of them want something. this one doesn't even know what wanting is.
go look at it
type about:blank in the bar. that's the whole site. no landing page. no subscribe. nothing to ship.
the blank tab will not start dsa for you. i still have to do that.
that's it.
